State Senator Chris Girdler says the early August start to the new school year in Kentucky is hurting the state’s tourist trade. The Pulaski County Republican raised the issue this afternoon during a committee hearing in Frankfort.

Girdler says even people who don’t live in the U.S. are troubled by Kentucky’s school calendar…

Kentucky Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker says the school calendar does impact the summer season. She says many pools have to be closed weekdays before Labor Day because there are no life guards to staff them. This summer, she adds, the later release from school because of  snow days reduced the amount of time young people had to use the parks.
