Saving the Animals of Rowan has proposed taking over the Tri-County Animal Shelter.

At last Tuesday's Rowan County Fiscal Court meeting, STAR officials expressed their interest in contracting with the county to take over the shelter.

STAR has many ideas it wants to implement, and feels taking over the facility could be good for the county.

STAR president Jackie Matthews said it is not a new concept that a rescue or humane society would run a county or state animal shelter.

Matthews said STAR would like to implement an education program for children, as well as start a low-cost spay and neuter program.
