Run Morehead is hosting its 5th annual 5K this October

Run Morehead is celebrating their 5th annual event this October. This year organizers asked participants to wear their brightest colors or a spooky Halloween costume. Registration for both the in-person race and virtual attendance of the 5K is $30.

Jenny Fraizer, Communications Director for the City of Morehead, said all the proceeds of the race go to Morehead’s Shop with a Cop program.

“We spend an evening at Walmart with all our officers; they take the kids around and let them pick out their Christmas gifts. If they want a bicycle or if they want Pokémon, they can kind of go through and have all that,” Fraizer said.

Fraizer said the 60 to 70 kids selected to participate are recommended by their school resource center as the ones who will benefit from it the most. She said the race raised $5,000 for the program last year.

The race starts at the Rowan County Arts Center, runs down First Street to the CHER building and then loops around through some neighborhoods and MSU’s campus, before ending up back at the arts center. Participants will receive a race shirt, medal, and the chance to win some awards.

Fraizer said the race was a huge success last year.

“We had our biggest turnout. We had more than 175 runners. This year we would love to see that number grow even more: our goal is to welcome at least 200 participants both in person and virtual,” Fraizer said.

The Run Morehead 5K will be on Friday, October 24. More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
