Locals asked to provide comments on proposals to improve US 60 in Carter County

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 9

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 9 officials are looking for more feedback after a public meeting last month to discuss potential changes to US 60. The portion of road in question is in Carter County between Rock Crusher Curve and the I-64 interchange.

Officials said at the meeting, over 60 attendees were presented with five potential paths forward. Options include two cross-country projects, two plans to improve the existing road, and finally, simply leaving the road as it is.

Allen Blair, spokesperson for KYTC District 9, said although they were divided on how, the majority of people at the meeting want something done to improve the stretch of road.

“Our goal for this project is to improve safety on that section of highway, as well as improve connectivity, make sure that there is a good highway for the future for people who need to go to work, go to school, or live along that area,” said Blair.

Blair added that this is an important opportunity for people who use the road to share their input.

“We want people to tell us, what are the needs there? What do they see the need being, and look also at some of our proposed ideas and say, well do you prefer the cross county route do you prefer rebuilding the road along its existing route,” said Blair.

This is just the planning stage of the project, and it will be a long time before any physical work is done. Blair stressed it is still important that locals weigh in on this topic so that they can best gauge community opinion.

Comment sheets, as well as all the information presented at the meeting, are available on the KYTC District 9 website.
