New orthopedic and sports medicine program announced in Morehead

St. Claire HealthCare

Officials announced last week that St. Claire HealthCare and Marshall Health are partnering to create an Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine program in Morehead.

Representatives said the orthopaedic team specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of bone, joint, ligament, tendon and muscle problems including arthritis, sports injuries, and other joint pain. Marshall Healthcare Orthopaedics is an internationally recognized department which treats athletes at Marshall university, along with many other sports programs in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Ohio.

Mark Rhodes is the Vice President for the St. Claire Medical Group. He said finding the right partner for the program was crucial.

“Marshall’s expertise and credibility combined with our excellent providers and clinical team, all of which are set at this table right here, will further enhance the quality of service and access for every athlete, every coach, every parent and every patient that we serve,” said Rhodes.

The program will be led in partnership with Dr. Ali Oliashirazi, department chair of orthopaedic surgery at Marshall Orthopedics, and a professor at Marshall University. He said the Morehead community will quickly see an impact as care continues.

“We have a phenomenal team who is here, and they will come in and take it to the next level. We are thinking about robotics as our next step for this institution. That will set us apart pretty quickly. And also, we provide tertiary care for the patients of this community,” said Oliashirazi.

St. Claire Hospital has served Morehead and surrounding areas since 1963. More information about orthopaedic care and sports medicine can be found on both the St. Claire and Marshall Orthopaedics websites.
