Teaming up again to advocate for progress in Eastern Kentucky, Congressman Hal Rogers and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed companion bills on Thursday in the House and Senate to begin the federal process to designate Southern and Eastern Kentucky as the Kentucky Wildlands National Heritage Area.

The legislation comes on the heels of Eastern Kentucky PRIDE's grant award from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) earlier this year to brand the region, famously explored by Daniel Boone, as the Kentucky Wildlands.

The Great American Dulcimer Convention will celebrate its 40th anniversary Sept. 23-24 at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville.

The talent will include Anne MacFie, Heidi Muller, Ted Yoder, Nancy Barker and Josh Noe, February Sky, and Miller, Miller and Meyer. Concerts wills be offered on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The concert fee is $10 per person. Free workshops will be offered during the day Saturday.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee and Louisiana are being included in a federal program intended to help persistently poor rural communities. The secretary made the announcement on Friday (January 17) at the Pine Mountain State Resort Park.

Vilsack says the so-called StrikeForce initiative will enable 73 Kentucky counties to take advantage of USDA programs involving conservation, food assistance and home and business loans.
