For the fourth time in the last six seasons, Morehead State men's golf has earned All-Academic Team recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America, the organization announced Wednesday.

Morehead State posted a team GPA of 3.35 during the 2019-20 academic year and was one of three Ohio Valley Conference institutions to garner the GCAA's All-Academic Team recognition and was one of 144 NCAA Division I men's golf programs to maintain a GPA greater than 3.00.

For the 10th and 11th times in program history, a Morehead State golfer has earned Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors with the selection of redshirt junior Ryan Gillum and junior Joe Muschong by the Golf Coaches Association of America for the 2019-20 season.

Following an exceptional high school career that has seen six Kentucky Christian Athletic Association Team Championships and three KCAA Individual Championships, Kyler Barton will continue his career with the Morehead State men's golf program, joining as a member of the team's 2020-21 signing class.

A local product, hailing from Morehead, Ky., Barton bolsters an expansive group of Kentucky golfers on the Eagles' 2020-21 roster, becoming the ninth Bluegrass State native to join the program for the 2020-21 season.

After claiming his first career outright medalist honors at the Musketeer Classic, Morehead State men's golf's Cooper Collins garnered additional hardware Wednesday as he was named Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week.

The honor marks the third of Collins' career, having also been honored once during each of the previous three seasons. Since the OVC began awarding Golfers of the Week during the 2004 season, he is the most honored Eagle golfer, passing former golfer Logan Hogge for the most OVC Golfer of the Week awards in program history.

For the first time since 2015, Morehead State men's golf claimed victory as the Eagles took home the championship at the NKU Fall Classic. The victory gives the program its first win since winning the NKU Fall Classic in 2015.

Tuesday's result also makes Morehead State the only two-time team champion in the five-year run of the NKU Fall Classic and secures the team's third overall (team or individual) victory at the event. The Eagles are also the only team to claim victory at both of the event's two homes, also claiming victory at Elks Run Golf Course in 2015.

For the fourth consecutive season, Morehead State men's golf ends its opening event of the year with a top-10 finish, including a top-three finish in each of the last three seasons. The Eagles third-place finish at the EKU Raising Cane's Intercollegiate also gives the program three consecutive top-10 placements at the event.

Making a return to nine familiar golf courses this year, Morehead State men's golf has finalized its 2019-20 slate. Twelve total events, including the 2020 Ohio Valley Golf Championships, comprise the slate.

"This schedule provides us the opportunity to play some great courses against quality competition," said head coach Matthew Martin. "Our fall schedule keeps us pretty close to home, but we venture to all parts of the country for the spring. We will be ready to compete for an OVC Championship when April rolls around."

Fashioning the program's best aggregate team score since 1997, Morehead State men's golf concluded play at the Ohio Valley Golf Championships on Tuesday. The team also finished with the lowest score relative to par (+7) at the OVC Championships during head coach Matthew Martin's tenure.

"The team did a great job comparing to compete this week," said Martin. "Unfortunately our start to the tournament put us behind the pace early."

After posting three top-10 finishes across three events during October, Morehead State men's golfer Cooper Collins has been named OVC Golfer of the Month. The accolade marks the first Golfer of the Month honor for Collins to go with his three career OVC Golfer of the Week awards.

Morehead State junior Nick Wilkins has been named Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, garnering the Eagles' first individual recognition of the fall season.

"Nick is very deserving of this honor," said head coach Matthew Martin. "I am looking for him to take the confidence gained from this and keep progressing with his game."

Morehead State placed among the top three of the 14-team field at the MSU Invitational on Tuesday in Murray, Ky. Four Eagles individually ranked in the top 11 overall, paving way for a third-place finish as a team. Morehead State shot seven-over at 284-290-285-859.

"There are lots of positives to take from this opening event," said head coach Matthew Martin. "Nine shots over three rounds is very manageable. We still need to eliminate our penalty shots and strokes above bogey."

Kentucky State Parks

Kentucky State Parks announced today that it will look at alternative recreational uses for the 9-hole golf courses at Carter Caves State Resort Park and Kincaid Lake State Park.

The parks previously sought proposals for private businesses to manage the golf courses, but did not receive any responses.

As a result, the course at Carter Caves will close permanently April 2. The course at Kincaid Lake will remain open through Oct. 31, 2017.

Senior Will Branham was named OVC Golfer of the Week after recording back-to-back rounds of 69 to win the Pinehurst Intercollegiate Championship.

He is the third Eagle to win OVC Golfer of the Week this year, following senior Logan Hogge and freshman Thomas DeMarco.

The Pikeville, Ky., native finished at even-par, one stroke ahead of Ball State's Johnny Watts, and the win marked the first of his collegiate career.

Morehead State senior-to-be Logan Hogge registered a 68-70-74--212 at the Big Spring Country Club on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to win the Kentucky State Amateur.

The field included 73 individuals, and Hogge was one of seven golfers to finish under par (216).

Hogge led from beginning to end in the event, which was sponsored by Clark's Pump-N-Shop and Marathon. The top five included a University of Kentucky golfer and former Kentucky Golf Association Player of the Year. Several Division I players were included in this year's field.

Morehead State junior golfer Logan Hogge, who ranks fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 72.1 stroke average, has been named to the 2014-15 All-OVC team.

Hogge becomes the first Eagle to earn all-conference honors since Matt Gann in 2006-07.

Hogge, who has recorded six top-10 finishes and three top-five performances this season, owns a team-best .894 winning percentage. He claimed medalist honors on Oct. 21 at the Austin Peay Intercollegiate, which was MSU's first tournament win since Oct. 10, 2006.

Morehead State junior Logan Hogge has been named adidas Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for the second consecutive week. The latest period covers Oct. 15-21. The Eagles had not previously been honored since Sept. 28, 2011.

Hogge posted a career-best 202 at the F&M Bank Austin Peay Intercollegiate to become Morehead State's first medalist in more than eight years. The native of Salt Lick, Ky., opened with rounds of 72 and 64 on Monday at The Links at Novadell before closing out with a 66 on Tuesday.

Junior Logan Hogge, who posted Morehead State's best men's golf score in more than six years, has been named adidas Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for the period of Oct. 8-14. The honor is MSU's first since Sept. 28, 2011.

Hogge, a native of Salt Lick, Ky., notched his best individual finish in 25 career events on Monday and Tuesday at the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational. He tallied rounds of 66, 78 and 72 at The Club at Olde Stone en route to a 216 and second place out of 66 individuals.

Morehead State Honors Rex Chaney at Retirement Dinner

Morehead State held a retirement dinner Friday night (Sept. 26) for Dr. Rex Chaney, who has been associated with the university since 1953. Chaney, who previously coached the Eagles in men's basketball and baseball, spent the past 38 years as the head men's golf coach at MSU.

Chaney was tabbed as the Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Coach of the Year after Morehead State captured league championships in 1977, 1981, 1993 and 1999. He also directed the Eagles to six other top-three finishes at the annual league tournament.

The Morehead State men's golf team posted a 294 in the final round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Monday (Sept. 8) at the Guyan Golf and Country Club. The Eagles closed out the 54-hole affair with an 895.

"The good news is our scores got better each day," Matthew Martin said after his first tournament as MSU's head coach. "The bad news is we have a lot of work to do as a group. Last place (15th) is not where we plan to be in the future."

Sophomore Will Branham posted a career-best 67 in the final round on Tuesday, and the Morehead State men's golf team finished seventh out of 14 schools in the Murray State Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course.

The Eagles sat in 14th place after registering a 311 in the opening round, but bounced back to record a 286 in the second round and 287 in the third round.  Morehead State's three-round 884 was its third sub-900 score in the past 11 tournaments.

Senior Michael Pinsonneault recorded a career-best 68 on Monday (September 9) in the second round of the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off Invitational. The Morehead State men's golf team is fourth out of seven schools entering the final round.

The Eagles (595) tallied rounds of 303 and 292 on the opening day at Wasioto Winds Golf Course.  UT Martin (568), Murray State (584) and Walters State (593) are ahead of MSU, while Pikeville (600), Bellarmine (606) and Spalding (619) round-out the field.
