The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics at Morehead State University is proud to announce the 2022 class members.  

Seventy-two students from across the Commonwealth were chosen to attend the Craft Academy, located on the campus of Morehead State University.

The students live in Grote-Thompson Hall and earn dual credit as they complete their final two years of high school at the academy while also taking college-level courses.

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics at Morehead State will hold a virtual graduation ceremony for its seniors on Saturday, May 16. 

Students, staff, the graduation platform party and registered distinguished guests will attend a Zoom event at 11 a.m.

The event will be recorded live, and a video of the ceremony will be made available to parents and family members.

Distinguished guests who wish to attend the live recording must RSVP by emailing craftacademy@moreheadstate.edu by May 13.

Students from Morehead State’s Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics and their faculty coaches from the School of Business Administration (SBA) earned four first-place awards at the Entrepreneurial Coal Land Redevelopment Program (ECLRP) Regional Challenge held Thursday, March 12.

The Morehead State University Foundation has received a commitment from Dr. Joe and Ambassador Kelly Craft of Lexington for an additional $3.5 million over the next five years.

This brings their total support for the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics to just over $10 million.

The gift will be used to ensure the sustained excellence of The Craft Academy – a STEM+X Residential High School for gifted and talented students in Kentucky- made possible through the Craft’s generosity as well as appropriations from the Kentucky General Assembly.

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is offering four unique summer camps this year designed to spark students' interests in space science, engineering, aeronautics and the arts.

"Take Flight: an FPV Drone Racing Camp" will be held June 21 and 22 and is open to incoming eighth and ninth grade students. During the two-day non-residential camp, students will learn to build, fly and race FPV drones. The cost of the camp is $250 and includes lunch, snacks and camp materials.

A Craft Academy student was among four Kentucky high school students to win the 29th Annual Secretary of State's Essay Contest.

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes recognized the four students at a ceremony at Rupp Arena during the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament.

Among the winners was Craft Academy's Victoria Kelly Brunson of Somerset. Other winners were:

9th Grade, Nevaeh Hope Dearmond, Logan County High School, Russellville

10th Grade, Chloe Morgan Watkins, Logan County High School, Russellville

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics at Morehead State University’s Dr. Garrick Ratliff, assistant director for guidance counseling services, recently wrote the spotlight for the Kentucky Department of Education’s email newsletter.

Prior to the Craft Academy, Dr. Ratliff was assistant superintendent of the Robertson County School System. A multi-time MSU graduate, his degrees include a Bachelor of Science degree, Master of Education, Master of Arts, Rank I, superintendent and director of pupil personnel certification, and a doctorate in education.

Morehead State University’s Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics will host its first graduation Saturday, May 13, at 5 p.m. in Button Auditorium.

A total of 55 students representing 33 counties from across the Commonwealth of Kentucky will be recognized at the ceremony.

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics opened in August 2015. Joseph and Kelly Craft of Lexington initially pledged $4 million in support of the Academy, which was the single largest cash gift in the history of the University.

Morehead State University’s Dr. Carol Christian has been appointed to the Kentucky Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented Education by Gov. Matt Bevin.

Dr. Christian, of Lexington, is the director of MSU’s Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics. She will represent postsecondary education institutions. Also appointed were Brandy Carol Daniels, of Somerset, and Dianne Burns Mackey, of Utica, All three terms expire December 15, 2019.

Morehead State University’s Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, a residential high school, is partnering with MSU’s Department Biology and Chemistry and SpaceTango to launch a cell culturing biology experiment to space.

The experiment, to be conducted aboard the International Space Station, is scheduled to launch this Saturday, Feb. 18, at 10:01 a.m. as part of the SpaceX CRS-10 crew resupply mission. This also will be the first to launch from the newly renovated, historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The director of Morehead State University’s new Craft Academy for Academic Excellence in Math and Science told the Kentucky legislature on Monday (June 8) that the school is ready to begin its inaugural class August 9th.

Dr. Carol Christian testified in Frankfort before House and Senate members of the Education Committee.

Dr. Christian says MSU recruited students from all over Kentucky and 60 were selected for the first class to begin this fall.

The inaugural class for Morehead State University’s new Craft Academy for Academic Excellence in Science and Mathematics is now set for the fall. He says the school received more than 100 applications.

MSU President Dr. Wayne Andrews says 60 gifted high school juniors have been chosen to attend the academy.

Stivers Discusses Kentucky's Legislative Agenda

Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers believes the General Assembly will pass legislation this year to combat heroin abuse and expand domestic violence protections for women.

The Manchester Republican is not as confident that the legislature can find common ground on charter schools.
