Big Sandy Community & Technical College (BSCTC) is pleased to announce Daniel K. Jeffries has won the 2020 Student Essay Contest with his work entitled "The Power of Hope." Jeffries will receive the $100 prize and an award certificate.

In writing his essay, in which he highlights the importance of forgiveness, Jeffries pulls from his studies in Comparative Religion, Introduction to Sociology and Anatomy and Physiology.

The work of renowned Appalachian artist Jeff Chapman-Crane is now on exhibit at the McCall Art Gallery of Big Sandy Community & Technical College. The exhibit runs from August 19 through October 11, and an opening reception will be held on August 27 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Jeff Chapman-Crane is a full-time professional artist from the southern Appalachian Mountains, where he has lived and practiced his art since the early 1970s. His art focuses on the culture of Appalachia, with an emphasis on portraits of mountain people.

On the second floor of the Campbell Science Building on the Prestonsburg campus of BSCTC there is a 125-gallon aquarium that has been meticulously maintained by Mathematics professor Dwight Smith for over twenty years! If you’ve ever own an aquarium of any size, you will understand the dedication and work that goes into creating a healthy underwater environment in which life can thrive.

Professor and Counselor Elizabeth M. Cole of Big Sandy Community and Technical College has been awarded a professional development scholarship from the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE), an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC).

Professor Cole will receive $500 to advance the professional identity and development of CCE credential holders.

Homelessness has become an ever-growing issue across the country and even here in eastern Kentucky. 

Dr. Sherry Zylka, Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) President/CEO joined in with other dancers from the area on Friday, November 2, at the Mountain Arts Center (MAC) for the first ever Dancing for Shelter event.

Ivanka Trump, advisor to President Donald Trump, visited Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) as part of an eastern Kentucky workforce training tour. She was joined by Gov. Matt Bevin, Congressman Hal Rogers, Secretary of Workforce Development and Education Derrick Ramsey and CEO of Alliance Resource Partners Joe Craft.

Trump, Bevin, Rogers and Ramsey were part of a roundtable discussion along with BSCTC President Sherry Zylka, Hazard Community and Technical College President Jennifer Lindon, students and local business executives.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) is pleased to announce a partnership with Paintsville Independent School District to train high school students to become certified nurse aides (CNA) in eastern Kentucky.

One important aim of the East Kentucky Science Center and Varia Planetarium (EKSC) is to promote STEM in our community, and this was part of the message that Susan Scott, EKSC Staff Instructor, shared when she presented at the Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative (KGSC) 11th annual conference at the University of Kentucky on June 21st, 2018.

Representing her role as a mentor in STEM education at the EKSC, Scott spoke on the importance of engaging children in meaningful science programs through fun and enriching experiments.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium (EKSC) was recently awarded $1,000 through the Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative (KGSC) Mini-Grant Program to help bring Racing Robotics Summer Camp to the EKSC.

The Mountain Arts Center (MAC) and Big Sandy Community and Technical College held a Christmas celebration at the MAC on Wednesday, December 7.

More than 1,500 people filled the lobby of the MAC to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus and slide down the slide, a replica of what appeared in the film “A Christmas Story.”

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) will host a Concert in the Park at 6 p.m., Saturday, October 15 at the Mayo Park on the Mayo campus of BSCTC.  The event is free and open to the public.

The event will include performances by the Big Sandy Singers and Band, an elite group of BSCTC vocalists and musicians, as well as past Big Sandy Idol winners from Johnson Central and Paintsville high schools. 

Concessions will be sold and proceeds will benefit the Skills USA chapter at BSCTC. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

Dr. Devin Stephenson, president of Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC), was a presenter at the Appalachian Region Commission’s (ARC) Aspire Appalachia Conference held on Wednesday, August 31 at the Millennium Centre.

The one-day event focused on collaborations in rural development.

“You cannot do this alone,” Dr. Stephenson told those in attendance. “It takes collaboration, motivation and an approach that focuses on results, not who gets the credit.”

The Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) Office of Cultural Diversity and the Library Seminar Series in conjunction with the Kentucky Chautauqua will present a performance of Charlotte Dupuy: Suing for Freedom at 9:25 a.m., Tuesday, February 2 in the Gearheart Auditorium on the Prestonsburg campus. This event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

Charlotte Dupuy was born in 1787 in Cambridge, Maryland, to George and Rachel Stanley who were enslaved.  At the age of eight, Charlotte was sold for $100 and forced to leave her family.

The Respiratory Therapy and Human Services programs at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) held the second-ever Wings of Love ceremony on Thursday, October 15 to commemorate Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

In October 1988, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 3,952,841 births in 2012 and 23,985 infant deaths.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) held Patriot Day ceremonies on its Pikeville, Prestonsburg and Mayo campuses on Thursday, September 10.   

Patriot Day is a day of remembrance of the September 11, 2001 attacks of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and in Shanksville, Penn. that killed 2,977 people.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) has received a grant from the American Legacy Foundation to help it implement a 100% Tobacco-Free college policy.

Effective July 1, 2015, all BSCTC campuses will be 100% tobacco-free. 

John Herald, director of facilities at BSCTC, said the policy will enhance the health and wellness of students, employees and visitors to the college.

“The college supports healthy lifestyles and understands that this policy may provide difficulty to some of our employees, students and visitors,” said Herald.

After 14 years, Dr. George D. Edwards, founding president and CEO of Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC), will step down as college president and CEO on January 5, 2015.  He will work on a special assignment through June 30, 2015.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s (BSCTC) Fine Arts department held its Little Sandy Singers Children’s Music and Drama camp this month on its Prestonsburg campus. 

The camp concluded with a performance of "An Evening of Disney Magic" on Thursday, July 24, in the Gearheart Auditorium.

Laura Ford Hall, associate professor of communications, served as the camp instructor.

Making the perfect bubble is an art.

Children at the East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium (EKSC) learned a lot about the science of bubbles on July 9 during a Bubble-ology camp.

The one-day event was open to children kindergarten through third grade and is part of an extensive outreach of programs offered by the EKSC this summer.

“I love making big bubbles,” said six-year-old Barrett Lemaster. “I want to do this when I get home.”

Big Sandy Community and Technical College held its fourth-annual Super Sunday College Fair on Sunday, February 23, at the Church of God MPG of T in Pikeville, Ky.

Super Sunday is an annual Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) statewide initiative intended to increase the college-going rate of students of color. 

"It’s great to get out in the community and answer questions,” said Billie Jean Cole, associate dean of student affairs at BSCTC.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) and the Global Studies and International Partnerships (GSIP) at the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, will sponsor a presentation on Love and Compassion by Tsering Phuntsok.

The presentation by Phuntsok, who has been a practicing Buddhist monk for the past 22 years, will be at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, in the Gearheart Auditorium on the Prestonsburg campus of BSCTC.

Phuntsok is an educator of Buddhist compassion, spiritual dancing, rituals, prayers and practices.

BSCTC Recognizes Letcher County Artist

Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg hosted a reception for Letcher County visual artist Marcus Kincer on Thursday evening (October 17).

The art gallery, located in the Magoffin Learning Resource Center, has been the home of Kincer’s work for the past month.

This is my first individual show,” said Kincer. “I’m very appreciative to the college for allowing me the opportunity to display some of my work.”

BSCTC Prestonsburg Holds Education Forum

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson was the keynote speaker at a special forum highlighting the Role of Higher Education in Workforce Development. The forum was held on Thursday (September 12) on the Prestonsburg campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College.

Abramson praised BSCTC for its commitment to higher education and having a retention rate that ranks second in the state, according to the Council on Postsecondary Education.
