Charles Fambrough – Blues At Bradley’s (1993)

Bassist Charles Fambrough, who first gained recognition as a bassist with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, has proven with his releases thus far that he is also a talented composer and bandleader.

Four of the five diverse pieces on this CD are his and Fambrough's octet (which includes altoist Donald Harrison, trombonist Steve Turre and Joe Ford on soprano), does a splendid job of interpreting the often-challenging but swinging repertoire.

Patti Austin - Live at The Bottom Line (1979)

Patti Austin came closest on this late-'70s live set to transferring onto vinyl the qualities that made her an outstanding vocalist outside of the studio. There's more spontaneity, emotion, and charisma in the vocals on this album than on almost all her other releases combined; perhaps the nightclub setting inspired her, or, more likely, Austin was free to sing without any agendas, marketing strategies, or producers' visions being factored into the process.

George Cables - Maybeck Recital Hall Series, Vol. 35 (1994)

Locked right into the mainstream, the ever-reliable George Cables gets his shot at a solo recital in Vol. 35 of Concord's voluminous Maybeck series.

From the opening track ("Over the Rainbow") onward, Cables immediately settles into the prevailing Maybeck idiom, sporting a do-everything technique rooted in bop, with frequent Tatum flourishes, Evans-influenced voicings, and standards as the specialty of the house.

Greg Abate Quintet feat. Richie Cole – Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1995)

Greg Abate has been on the music scene for a long time, having served in both the Ray Charles and Artie Shaw orchestras. This live set recorded at Chan's (a Chinese restaurant located in Woonsocket, RI) showcases a friendly battle of alto saxophonists, mostly playing Abate's originals.

Morehead State Public Radio (WMKY, 90.3FM) has announced the addition of two new, locally-produced music programs.

Big Band Boulevard and Live From The Jazz Lounge will be heard on a rotating schedule Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m. and repeating Friday nights at 10:00 p.m. In addition, Jazz Happening Now will move to Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
