Women's Basketball Qualifies for Program's Second WNIT

MSU Athletics

After finishing the 2018-19 season with the second-most wins in school history and a second-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference, the Morehead State women's basketball has received the OVC's automatic bid to play in the 2019 Women's National Invitational Tournament.

The Eagles finished the season 23-10 overall and were 13-5 against OVC competition on their way to qualifying for the WNIT. It is just the second time in the program's history of qualifying for the postseason event - the last coming during the 2016-17 campaign.

The WNIT is an annual tournament involving 64 of the nation's top Division I teams. All games are hosted by participating schools in the single-elimination tournament.

The full tournament field will be announced on Monday, March 18, following the NCAA Tournament Selections have been made.

"Obviously our goal was to make the NCAA Tournament but this is still a great opportunity for our program," said Morehead State head coach Greg Todd. "The WNIT gives our players the opportunity to play a tough national opponent, probably on the road, and represent our league and school at a high level."

"The OVC was toughest it had been in several years so for us to finish second and earn this bid is a big deal for our program," added Todd. "This will be a great experience for our team to probably go on the road and play in a highly respected national tournament."

When the Eagles competed in the 2017 WNIT, they faced off with Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The team dropped a 67-58 effort to MTSU led by Miranda Crockett's 11 points to conclude a 21-10 season.

Morehead State has now won at least 20 games in three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.
