WMKY offers Independence Day specials on July 4

Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR) will celebrate the July 4 holiday with special programs

“Defending Independence - Live from West Point Military Academy” @ 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The Tabernacle Choir performed at historic West Point in the Hudson River Valley just outside New York City on the Fourth of July. The Tabernacle Choir was joined by the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. Music performed includes, “America, the Dream Goes On”, “Cohan’s Big Three”, "Armed Forces Medley" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic", which won the choir a Grammy.

"July 4 with Leroy Anderson and the Boston Pops" @ 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.

This radio special features Leroy Anderson, America’s most popular light music composer, and the Boston Pops Orchestra, which premiered many of his short orchestral miniatures. This special explores how the two came together to make music that will be remembered for generations.

“American Anthem” @ 11 a.m.

Hosted by Elizabeth Blair and Tom Cole from NPR’s Arts Desk, American Anthem: The Special will highlight standout stories from NPR’s American Anthem series. The hour will weave together the creation, popularization, and evolution of a selection of songs about our shared national identity as Americans. Songs like Fight the Power, This Land is Your Land, Dixie, and The Times They Are a Changin’ were all written as a response to a moment or a movement and grew into an anthem. We put those songs and others meant to serve as a uniting rallying cry, or way to push back against politics and division in conversation with each other in this special. They all speak to the changing ways in which we think and rethink what it means to be an American and each has evolved into an anthem of its own.

“The O’Jays: The Last Word” @ 7 p.m.

If you were looking for truth in music - you found The O' Jays. If you wanted a reason to hope - you listened to The O' Jays. And if you felt like dancing - The O' Jays for the win! After 60 years in the music business, The O' Jays have made their final album - The Last Word. It's a parting message full of wisdom, love and groove from the masters!
