Veterans Day events planned

Morehead State University and the local community will honor American service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

At 11 a.m., a Doughboy Statue and Wreath Ceremony will be held next to the Veterans Wall of the Rowan County Arts Center. The doughboy statue has recently received a makeover and has returned to its foundation.

Morehead State will host a free lunch for all current and former members of the military from 11:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. in the Crager Room of the Adron Doran University Center. Entertainment also will be provided.

MSU Athletics will host a “Salute to Armed Services” Saturday, Nov. 15 for the football contest at 1 p.m. and volleyball at 5 p.m. There will be free admission to student veterans and only a $1charge for all current or former military members and their families.

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect). The United States also originally observed Armistice Day; it then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954.
