Unity March Honors Dr. Martin Luther King

Ball State Daily

Thousands gathered in downtown Lexington Monday morning (Jan. 20) for an annual tribute to civil rights legend Martin Luther King, Jr.

While the march through downtown Lexington is a mainstay, several participants say there's much more to be done if our society is to live up to Dr. King's dream of racial and economic equality.

Kennedy Nelson believes more people should experience an event like the annual unity breakfast.

“It should be broadcast and celebrated around the community, like we had a breakfast to honor him and we had speakers and people wrote essays and all sorts of things to honor him and what unity is really about.” –Kennedy Nelson

On this Martin Luther King Day, the Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice is celebrating 30 years of existence.  Council leader Richard Mitchell remembers a button his organization produced several years ago that made a point about civil involvement.

“It said wearing buttons isn’t enough.  Where marching isn’t enough, of course, but it’s something it does bring us together as black, white, brown, Asian.” –Richard Mitchell

Beyond the march, 15-year-old Cameron Brown says the point of Dr. King's message can be made by telling other people, posting banners, and having ceremonies.
