University of Kentucky researchers say they have new data that could translate to shortened quarantine times for students exposed to COVID-19 who are asymptomatic.
The UK study is based on 90 asymptomatic students who were tested at several points throughout the standard two-week quarantine. Of the 16 percent who contracted the virus, none received an initial positive result on day 10 or 14 and all were positive by day 7.
The results are consistent with recent CDC guidance suggesting the recommended 14-day quarantine could be trimmed to 7 days for asymptomatic people who test negative.
Health experts have said the abbreviated quarantines could increase compliance and help reduce depression and anxiety in those asked to isolate. The UK study could play a role in determining the university's coronavirus guidelines for the upcoming semester.
