Traffic Restrictions on I-64 in Carter and Rowan Counties

WLWT

One-lane traffic will begin today on I-64 in Carter and Rowan counties for a $11 million slide repair and pavement rehab project.

Contractors will start slide repairs first on the westbound side of the interstate around the 149 mile marker, which is already reduced to one lane due to pavement damage.

Beginning today, Tuesday, July 7, one lane of both westbound and eastbound I-64 will be closed from the Fleming Fork overpass at mile marker 150 past the Rowan County line near the weigh station at the 148 mile marker to build a median crossover to divert traffic away from the work zone.

By early next week, the week of July 13, the median crossover will be built and all westbound I-64 traffic will be diverted onto the eastbound side of the interstate. All interstate traffic will remain two-way on the eastbound side until November in the following pattern:

I-64 West approaching from Olive Hill: All traffic will shift left into one lane prior to the 150 mile marker, travel across the median onto the eastbound side of the interstate, then cross back over to the westbound side near the 148 mile marker.

I-64 East approaching from Morehead: All traffic will shift right into one lane prior to the 148 mile marker, and remain in one lane until past the 150 mile marker.

As a safety precaution, concrete barriers will separate each direction of traffic during the time two-way traffic is in place. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 miles per hour with a double-fine zone, and will be enforced. Motorists should heed all message boards and warning signs.

Commercial truck drivers and companies hauling wide loads should note that eastbound and westbound I-64 travel will be restricted to 14-foot lanes until November. Due to limited pavement, no loads over 14-feet wide will be able to pass through the work zone.

The interstate improvement project also includes tree trimming, drainage improvement and new blacktop along six miles of I-64 from mile marker 148 in Rowan County to near KY 2 in Rowan County. While some work and lane closures are possible through this fall and winter, the majority of the large-scale work and paving will occur next spring. Traffic changes will be announced.

The project is being done under a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet low-bid contract awarded to L&M Asphalt Partners Ltd., doing business as ATS Construction, for $10,677,214.61.
