Summer Road Projects to Impact Several Counties in the Region

KTUL

Motorists should watch for lane changes, flaggers and other highway construction traffic impacts this week, the week of June 22, in northeast Kentucky.

In Ashland, contractors have temporarily closed all traffic access to the KY 716 (Summit) intersection at US 60 for concrete pavement construction from the Kentucky State Police post to Speedway. No turns into KY 716 or out of KY 716 are being permitted.

All traffic that needs access to KY 716 in the Armco Park area, to the federal prison or to residential areas along Little Garner Road (KY 3293) may detour using Roberts Drive (KY 3292) and Bob McCullough Drive (KY 766). Detour will be marked. Also, motorists should note that the Summit Road intersection west of the work area is not affected by construction.

The KY 716-US 60 intersection will remain closed to all traffic for the next three to four weeks.

Elsewhere in Kentucky Department of Highways District 9, expect the following major road construction work zones:

BOYD COUNTY

One-lane traffic continues on US 60 at Ashland between Rose Hill and the KY 716 intersection in Summit, with KY 716 intersection restrictions. Watch signs and message boards for detours, and expect possible flagged traffic during daytime work hours.

CARTER COUNTY

On I-64 in Carter County, the right lane is closed between mile markers 149 and 150 just east of the Rowan County line due to an embankment failure.

ELLIOTT COUNTY

KY 7 is being rebuilt from KY 706 to the Elliott-Carter county line; possible lane closures, lane shifts, flagged traffic and other impacts.

FLEMING COUNTY

Along the Flemingsburg Bypass (KY 11), contractors are rebuilding the roadway between Elizaville Road (KY 32) and Mt. Sterling Road (KY 11) intersections. Two-way traffic is being maintained, with daily flagged traffic possible around work zones. Speed limit is reduced. Watch for traffic shifts and narrow lanes.

GREENUP COUNTY

In Greenup County, the Carl Perkins Bridge (KY 8S) is closed for painting. All traffic is being rerouted along the nearby U.S. Grant Bridge.

MASON COUNTY

Within the next week to two weeks, paving is expected to begin along eight miles of the AA Highway (KY 9) in Mason County from KY 11 to the Lewis County line. Watch for one lane traffic controlled by flaggers. Expect delays.

At Maysville, US 62 is one lane each direction between the AA Highway and Moody Drive. Inbound and outbound vehicles are now traveling on new pavement. Right lane closed approaching the work zone from downtown, and left lane closed approaching the AA Highway intersection. Within the next one to two weeks, work will start in the middle lanes – and all traffic will be shifted into outside lanes, with left turns only allowed at signalized intersections. Traffic will have to make U-turns at those locations to access entrances and side streets blocked by construction.

Sardis Road (US 62) remains closed in southwest Mason County due to an embankment failure near the 6.5 mile marker between Middleton Hill Road and Murphysville Road east of the KY 596 intersection. Repairs are underway, but until complete all traffic should detour using US 68 and KY 324.

Work to resurface the Clyde Barbour Parkway (US 68) from the AA Highway to the William Harsha Bridge will likely continue into the week of June 22, with work zones and one-lane traffic near the bridge.

NICHOLAS COUNTY

In Nicholas County, a $3 million project to replace the KY 32 bridge over Scrubgrass Creek near Myers is under way. Watch for traffic shifts onto new pavement on either side of the work area, as well as possible flagged traffic.

ROWAN COUNTY

KY 32 north of Morehead is being rebuilt between Park Hills and the Fleming County line. Watch for flaggers and intermittent stopped traffic.

KY 1722 is closed at the 9 mile marker where a slip has undermined the road. Repairs under way now include full excavation of the roadway, stabilization of the embankment, installation of new drainage measures and other work – all of which will require the road’s closure until late August. Detour using KY 111 through Hillsboro in Fleming County to reconnect with KY 1722 via KY 158 and KY 801 in Rowan County.

In addition, this is prime mowing season with contractors and state highway crews on tractors mowing roadsides. Motorists should watch for slow-moving equipment and heed warning signs. When entering a mowing zone, slow down and watch for slow traffic around curves or when topping hills.
