Softball Rallies Late to Down Murray State in Game Two, 4-2

Morehead State Athletics

Trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning, Morehead State softball rallied for four runs in the top of the inning to down Murray State, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.

In the first game, the Eagles fell, 5-1.

With the split, Morehead State's record moves to 18-9 overall and 2-2 in OVC play.

"We had two solid pitching performances today. Unfortunately, we didn't get the win in game one, but we were resilient in game two and found a way to win. Murray State is a solid team and that was a great conference win," said head coach David Williams.

Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, junior Hannah Murphy and junior Kylie Holton reached to start the inning on a single and a walk. Following a wild pitch, junior Lindsay Ward then doubled in Murphy and junior Abigail Rhodes, who pinch ran for Holton.

Junior Taylor Wheeler then tripled in Ward to take the lead and the Eagles added another run on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Allison Rager.

Senior Megan Tymorek remained in the game to pitch the seventh inning and retired the Racers in order to end the game.

Tymorek (4-3, 3.12) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just five hits and two runs, just one of which was earned. She walked one and struck out three.

The Eagles managed seven hits, led by Ward, who finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.

The win marked Williams' 300th of his coaching career.

In the first game, the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by sophomore Ellen Barrett in the top of the second.

They maintained that lead until Murray State answered with a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the fifth.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, Murray State's Jocelynn Rodgers hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game.

Junior Chelsea McManaway (10-4, 0.88) picked up the loss for the Eagles, allowing five hits and five earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. She struck out eight and walked five.

Murphy went 2-for-3 with two singles in the loss.

Morehead State returns to action on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET when they travel to Huntington, W. Va. to face Marshall.
