MSU Athletics

The Morehead State softball team concluded its two-day tournament event with a split decision, picking up a win over St. Bonaventure while dropping a game to Bowling Green, on Sunday afternoon at University Field.

The Eagles played in their first extra-inning game of the season as they defeated the Bonnie 10-7 in the days first game before falling to Bowling Green in game two, 9-2, to finish the two-day Morehead State Classic.

MOREHEAD STATE 10, ST. BONAVENTURE 7

A season-high 12 hits helped the Eagles to their second win of the season over St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.

Morehead State fell behind 3-1 after the first inning before two home runs in the fourth inning propelled them to a 6-3 advantage.

Junior Cassie Griffin belted her first-career dinger - a three-run shot that drove in freshman Elizabeth Lyndsay and senior Aubrey Bennett. Two batters later, sophomore Alexis Strother turned on her second home run of the tournament and 2019 season. Strother's homer drove in junior Lindsay Anderson to put the Eagles in front by three runs.

The Bonnie scored runs in the fourth and fifth frames to answer before a solo home run tied the game in the seventh inning to force extras.

The Eagles wasted little time jumping back in front. Chyenne Meyer's pinch-hit attempt fell in center field following and error that allowed Griffin to score easily after being placed on second as the team's used the International Tiebreaker rule.

Freshman Peyton Slater and junior Helyna Bissell helped pad the lead with RBI knocks as both recorded their second hits of the afternoon. Slater went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double while Bissell finished 2-for-3 with a two RBI, a double, and a walk.

The Bonnies were able to plate a run in the bottom half but junior pitcher Randi Hamilton (2.2) sealed the game in the eight to secure herself and her team its second win of the season. The Cache, Oklahoma, native tossed a season-best seven and two-third innings.

Rylee Hehir suffered the loss for St. Bonaventure as her team regressed to 2-11 overall.

BOWLING GREEN 9, MOREHEAD STATE 2

Despite Bennett going 3-for-4 at the plate, Morehead State fell 9-2 to Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon.

After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the third, Bennett slapped an RBI single up the middle to put her team on the board in the bottom half.

The team's traded runs in the fourth before Bowling Green pulled away with runs in the fifth (1), sixth (2), and seventh (1) innings.

Freshman Princess Valencia joined Bennett with multi-hits in the game, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Hamilton (2-3) started the game and was tagged with the loss for Morehead State.

Bowling Green's Meredith Miller was awarded with the win as her team improved to 10-11 overall.

Morehead State's homestand continues as it plays host to Wright State in a doubleheader matchup on Tuesday. The Eagles and Raiders will take the field at 2:00 p.m. for the first game of the twin-bill matchup.
