Soccer Eagles Notch Win Over APSU

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State soccer team played 10 on 11 for nearly 50 minutes, but still managed to notch a 2-1 victory over Ohio Valley Conference opponent Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 28) at Jayne Stadium.

The Eagles improve to 6-2-4 overall, 1-0-1 in conference action and 4-0-0 at home, while the Governors slip to 2-8-0 overall, 1-1-0 in league play and 0-3-0 on the road.

"Today was a big-time team effort, especially once we had to play 10 on 11," Head Coach Warren Lipka said. "I'm really proud of the way our young ladies performed. Their work rate was impressive, plus they showed a lot of fortitude and determination."

Junior defender Kimberly Golden put MSU on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute with her third goal of 2014. The score, which was the second shot after a corner kick, came off assists from senior defender Elizabeth Tresnak and senior midfielder Caity Fox.

Austin Peay sophomore midfielder Alyssa Plowman evened the match less than three minutes later. She posted her first goal of the year on a broken play after a free kick.

Senior forward Macy Cobb tallied the eventual game-winner for the Eagles in the 79th minute. She registered her third goal of the campaign after a long cross from junior defender Kelsey Patera and short pass across the box from senior forward Jade Flory.

Morehead State tallied a 24-9 shots advantage, including 12-6 on goal. Cobb and Flory posted five attempts each for the Eagles. MSU also registered a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

One of Morehead State's student-athletes was issued a red card with less than five minutes to play in the first half. That caused the Eagles to go the rest of the way down a player.

"I was happy with the depth we showed today," Lipka said. "This was an impressive victory because we fought through some adversity and everyone contributed. I thought our numbers in the attacking half led to our big advantages in shots and shots on goal."

Morehead State returns to action on Friday (Oct. 3) when it hosts Jacksonville State at 6 p.m. The Eagles wrap up Homecoming Weekend on Sunday (Oct. 5) when they entertain Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m. The MSU vs. TTU match will be shown on the OVC Digital Network.

"Our players are happy to be home for an entire week," Lipka added. "We will have to be ready against Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech. They are both quality opponents. We had another very good crowd today, and we hope that continues next weekend."
