Sawstone Fighting Beer Giant

David Potter

Rowan County’s newest brewery is facing controversy from a major craft beer company.

Stone Brewing, one of the nation’s leading beer providers, has filed a trademark cancellation request against Sawstone Brewery in Morehead. Stone has said it does not want other brewery’s using the word stone in their business names.

The word "Sawstone" comes from the brewery’s building, one of the only historical limestone buildings left in Kentucky. Cofounder Derek Caskey says if he doesn’t take legal action, the future of their company could be in jeopardy…

Fighting major companies in court can create expensive legal fees, and Caskey says smaller businesses like Sawstone could struggle to pay all the expenses. The Sawstone Brewing team has launched a go-fund-me page to help fund any additional legal fees, which can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/stop-stone-brewing-co-and-their-bullying-ambitions?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&fbclid=IwAR0Mk2uGpfyjtUdNqb7y9qg0-n85sEJqSHS7tqV9PtCUydtH4H5dRTKbLSQ
