RSVP, Adkins Library launch drug prevention program

Morehead State University

The Morehead State University Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) partnered with the Rocky J. Adkins Public Library to launch a drug prevention program in Elliott County.

The collaboration will provide materials for an evidence-based drug prevention program called “Too Good for Drugs.” The program was implemented during a three-week summer day camp held June 10–28. Library staff and volunteers led the camp, which benefited 60 students in Elliott County, ranging from five to 13 years old. Students learned the importance of good decision making and how to avoid alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

“As we are all familiar with the opioid epidemic, drug prevention programs are extremely important,” said Justin Slone, assistant director of RSVP. "The library is an RSVP volunteer station and we felt that in addition to focusing on reading that implementing a drug prevention program was important as well.”

The camp is space-themed, and students will do crafts and other fun activities related to the theme.
