Rowan Students Compete in National History Day Contest

Genny Jenkins

A group of eighth grade students from Rowan County Middle school is competing in the National History Day competition this week.

Established in 1974, the National History Day Contest encourages more than half a million middle and high school students around the world to conduct original research on historical topics of interest. After a regional and state competition, only the top two entries in each category advance to the National contest.

Mia Carver, Ava Blackledge and Caroline Carlisle entered the competition with a performance piece about Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Carlisle says the group evaluated cases from throughout RBG’s career as a defense attorney.

Blackledge says it was interesting to learn how Bader Ginsburg grew from a defense attorney to a Supreme Court Justice.

Carver says the project taught her that she can exceed everyone’s expectations.

The competition took place virtually this week at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park. The results will be released in mid-June.
