Rowan Schools: In-person Return Unclear

Rowan County Board of Education

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the Commonwealth and Rowan County, Rowan school officials are unable to say when students may be able to return to in-person classes.

Superintendent John Maxey says along with having all students return to virtual learning, the district has also cancelled all sports and extracurricular activities for the time being.  He does say using the Rowan County Judge Executive’s COVID dashboard has been effective in keeping up to date on outbreak information.  Maxey believes it could save some time when students return to school as well.

Another issue Maxey says is creating a hurdle for the return to in-person learning is the shortage of substitutes. He says while the contact tracing being done by the Gateway District Health Department has been fast acting, it has also resulted in several staff members being quarantined.

School district officials will continue to reevaluate the situation on a weekly basis.
