Rowan County Receives Agricultural Development Grant

UW Extension

The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board, chaired by Gov. Steve Beshear, recently awarded $85,591 in Rowan County Agricultural Development Funds for a County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP).

The Rowan County Conservation District submitted a proposal to the Rowan County Agricultural Development Council and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board to provide cost-share incentives to area farmers.

“To remain viable, our farmers must continue adapting to an evolving world and the technological advances it is producing. I am committed to giving our farmers the tools and resources they need to remain competitive and continue Kentucky’s strong farming tradition. The KADF County Agricultural Investment Program provides incentives for farmers to try new techniques and technologies to keep their operations competitive and continue this tradition,” said Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear.

CAIP is designed to provide farmers with incentives to allow them to improve and diversify their current production practices. CAIP combines what were previously known as county model cost-share programs into one, where each model program becomes an investment area.

“I am always excited when Rowan County receives funds. I am especially pleased that Rowan County farm families will benefit greatly from this on-farm investment program, as they continue to improve and diversify their agriculture operations,” said Sen. Walter Blevins of Morehead.

CAIP covers a wide variety of agricultural enterprises in its 10 investment areas, including commercial production of aquaculture; bees and honey; equine; forage; beef and dairy cattle; goats and sheep; horticulture; poultry; swine; and timber, as well as energy efficiency and production; farm infrastructure and water enhancement; marketing; and value-added production.

“I am happy to see farm families in Rowan County have this opportunity and know these funds will be put to good use to help farmers improve their land and what they raise and grow. Projects like this and hundreds of others like it are an ideal use of our tobacco settlement dollars,” said House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins of Sandy Hook.

Producer applications will be available at the conservation district office March 31 through April 11.  The conservation district’s office is located at 224 West First Street in Morehead.

For more information about the sign-up period and the complete guidelines for this program in Rowan County, contact Tammy Winkleman with the conservation district at: (606) 784-5375.
