Road Work Planned For AA Highway

Motorists should watch for lane closures and other traffic changes the week of May 12 along eight miles of the AA Highway (KY 10) in the Letitia area of rural Greenup County.

The $495,000 project, awarded by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to Temple and Temple Excavating and Paving Inc., includes pavement sealing operations and micro-surfacing of all lanes of the AA Highway between the Lewis-Greenup county line east to the KY 7 intersection.

Micro-surfacing is a high-tech process using a thin layer of quick-set paving material to preserve the roadway surface. The work is similar to asphalt paving, and will require traffic lane closures during dawn-to-dusk operation.

Contractors expect to install work zones signs May 1, with construction and traffic impacts beginning the week of May 12. Work will take several weeks to complete. During those weeks, motorists should expect daytime lane closures and delays with traffic controlled by flaggers along various two-mile sections of the AA Highway. Message boards will be used to announce traffic changes.

Motorists are also advised to avoid driving on newly placed paving material, which means traffic on side roads may be stopped for lengthy periods of time. Contractors will be available to assist motorists at intersections.

In addition, a separate road improvement project on the AA Highway from KY 7 past US 23 to the Greenup locks and dam is currently ongoing. Motorists should watch for lane closures there as well, especially near the US 23 intersection.

Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones, reduce distractions by making them “no phone zones,” and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
