Paramount Arts Center Classes Begin Jan. 12

Budding actors, singers, dancers and artists, can sign up for the Spring Semester of Arts Academy classes.

Another line-up of great variety includes Baby Boppers Hip Hop, Auditioning, Directing, and Theatre Games and Improvisation. Complete schedule of classes follows. Registration is accepted up through the first week of classes. The semester closes with a showcase of performances for family and friends, April 13.

Baby Boppers Hip Hop Dance: Cost is $160 for the semester. Instructor is Shaun Terry. Mondays from 6 – 7 PM, ages 5-9. Focuses on building rhythm, breaking down shyness, experimenting with various hip hop styles and an introduction to tumbling for break dancing.

Beat Breakers Hip Hop Dance: Cost is $160 for the semester. Instructor is Shaun Terry. Mondays from 7 – 8 PM, ages 10-14. All hip hop styles, highlighting the students’ skills as an individual dancer.  Tumbling for break dancing with more focus on technique

Show Stoppers Hip Hop Dance: Cost is $160 for the semester. Instructor is Shaun Terry. Mondays from 8 – 9 PM, ages 14 – Adult. Focus on technique and more advanced hip hop moves using current and old school hip hop.

Private Voice Lessons: Cost is $120 per month. Date and Time to be arranged with instructor, ages 12 – adult. Instructor is Joshua Jannotta. Voice lessons will teach correct vocal technique and music theory, using the Bel Canto style.  Lessons will be tailored to teach each student different styles of music and purpose for vocal singing (i.e. contest, audition preparation, etc.)

From Pen to Stage: Cost is $125 for the semester. Tuesdays 6 – 7:30 PM. January 13 – March 17, ages 13 – 18. Instructor is Desiree Sowards. Students will collaborate to write, direct, costume/prop, and perform a short original production – getting an advanced taste of theatre creation from first concepts to final bows.

Auditioning – How to Dazzle the Director: Cost is $160 for the semester. Mondays 6 – 7 PM, ages 8 – Adult. Instructor is Melanie Cornelison. Auditioning can intimidate anyone.  This class will teach you all the basics:  what to expect from an audition, practice cold reading, how to survive a dance audition even if you aren’t a dancer, how to pick songs that will showcase your talent, audition do’s and don’ts, learn what a casting director looks for and how to be realistic about what parts are right for you.

Developing a Character: Cost is $160 for the semester. Thursdays from 6 – 7 pm, ages 10 – Adult. Students registering for this class should have acting experience. As an actor you have to bring a character to life on the stage.  This class will explore how to develop speech patterns, physical characteristics and the depth of the character.  We will be examining clues from the script, subtext, musicals, period plays and the differences an actor needs to use to make your character believable.

Theatre Games and Improvisation: Cost is $160 for the semester. Wednesdays from 5:30 – 6:30 pm, ages 8-14. Instructor is Joanna Berner. Learn fun theatre and improvisation games.

Paul Hitchcock earned his Masters in Communications from Morehead State University and Bachelors in Radio-TV/Psychology from Georgetown College. A veteran broadcaster for more than 40 years and an avid fan of blues, jazz and American roots music. Hitchcock has been with WMKY since 1986 and was named General Manager in 2003. He currently hosts "Muddy Bottom Blues" (Fri., 8pm-9pm), "Nothin' But The Blues" (Sat., 8pm-12am), "Sunday Night Jazz Showcase" and "Live From The Jazz Lounge" (Sun., 8pm-9pm) and "The Golden Age of Radio" (Sun., 2pm-3pm). He also serves as producer for "A Time For Tales" and "The Reader's Notebook."
