The month of October and Halloween may have come and gone, but MSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance will be presenting a popular Broadway adaptation that will have audiences thinking of supernatural beings.
As the second play in the 2017-18 theatrical season, MSU will present “Ghost: The Musical.” Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 27, 28 and 29, and at 2 p.m. Nov. 30, at The Lucille Caudill Little Theatre in Breckinridge Hall on campus.
“Ghost: The Musical” is the stage adaptation of the incredibly popular 1990 film “Ghost” starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. Adapted by the film’s Academy Award-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, the story follows Sam and Molly, a young couple whose connection takes a shocking turn after Sam’s untimely death. Trapped between two worlds, Sam refuses to leave Molly when
he learns she is in grave danger. Desperate to communicate with her, he turns to a storefront psychic, Oda Mae Brown, who helps him protect Molly and avenge his death.
The musical is a collaborative effort of the School of Creative Arts, including representation from the Department of Theatre and Dance, the Department of Music, and the Department of Art & Design.
Natasha Davis, associate professor of dance at MSU, said she is excited for MSU students to tackle this popular love story that has been turned into a “pop-rock-type of musical” along the likes of “Mamma Mia!” or “Rock of Ages.” She also said the popularity and nostalgia of the movie “Ghost” has brought a lot of students from other academic departments (English and biology majors, to name a few) to try their hand at performing in on stage, which Davis believes is an encouraging and welcome change for students and the audience.
“I think that is the whole purpose and premise of our department is we are an inviting department,” she said. “You do have those students who are across campus sitting in a business class that has the passion for acting and a passion for singing. Just the fact that they know they can do that, that it’s not just limited to theatre and dance students, they’ve been able to make connections with theatre students.”
