MSU soccer defeated in season finale at UT Martin

The Morehead State soccer team scored the first goal of the match but ultimately fell, 2-1, against Ohio Valley Conference leading UT Martin on Sunday afternoon at Skyhawk Soccer Field.

Senior defender Makenna Lavatori scored the match's first goal when she booted home a free kick from near midfield in the eighth minute of play.

Lavatori, who earned the OVC Defensive Player of the Week award on Tuesday, now has two goals in 2018 and in her career.

The Eagles held onto a 1-0 advantage as the team's went to the halftime break.

UT Martin tied the match in the 55th minute of play when Amy McGivern headed a cross from Nicole Collins past senior goalkeeper Michelle Washburn. The Skyhawks took the lead nine minutes later when Danae Kaldaridou was able to get a clean look off a deflection at the goal line.

Morehead State was outshot by UT Martin 24-7 in the match.

Washburn made eight saves in the match while Makenzie Crawford made two stops for the Skyhawks.

The Eagles finish their regular season with a final tally of 5-13 and 4-6 in conference play. Morehead State will play in the OVC Soccer Championship Tournament as the eight seed - it is the first postseason appearance for the team since 2015.

UT Martin wraps up its' regular season as the OVC regular season champion after going 14-2-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the OVC. The Skyhawks will receive a bye in the semi-final round of the conference tournament which they will host

The Eagles will take on SIUE in the opening round of the conference tournament on Friday at 1:00 p.m. ET at the EKU Soccer Field. The winner will take on the fourth seeded Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Oct. 28.
