MSU to receive Kentucky Aerospace Achievement Award

Morehead State University will be the recipient of the 2014 Kentucky Aerospace Achievement Award. Presentation of the award for the Space Science Center will occur at a formal banquet on Nov. 1 in Lexington at the Aviation Museum of Kentucky.

The Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame in Lexington provides this recognition to outstanding aerospace organizations in the Commonwealth.

Four other honorees will be inducted into the hall of fame. Host of this event is the Aviation Museum of Kentucky, at Blue Grass Airport.

"I am delighted for Morehead State University and the Space Science Center faculty, staff and students,” said Dr. Ben Malphrus, chair Department of Earth and Space Sciences. "The Space Science Center is unique in that all of  our major space programs are implemented by teams that include aerospace industry and international partners working closely with our staff and particularly with our students- undergraduate students are intimately involved in the design, fabrication, testing and on-orbit operation of our space assets.”

The Space Science Center is a division of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences in the College of Science and Technology. The Space Science Center, located at 235 Martindale Drive, is a $15.6 million support facility containing classrooms, laboratories and offices. The center is a two-story, state-of-the-art building encompassing 45,000 square feet of floor space. It includes a control center for the 21-meter space antenna system on the ridge top above Nunn Hall, RF and electronics laboratories, anechoic chambers that mimics the electromagnetic environment of space, a rooftop antenna test range, space system development laboratory, and digital Star Theater.

MSU’s Department of Earth and Space Sciences has a range of academic programs and courses to prepare students for careers in aerospace, space systems or advanced degrees in the space sciences. It is one of five programs available in the United States in higher education.

Students can achieve a Bachelor of Science degree in space science, a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with an area of concentration in astrophysics, and now a Master of Science degree in space systems engineering is available.

The Aviation Museum of Kentucky is a non-profit institution and the official aviation museum of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  The Aviation Achievement Award has recognized honorees since 1996 for contributions to aviation and aerospace.
