MSU to celebrate ‘International Education Week”

MSU

Dr. Karen Petrone, professor and chair of the University of Kentucky’s Department of History, will kick off International Education Weekas she will deliver the celebration’s keynote lecture Monday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in room 301 of the Adron Doran University Center.

Dr. Petrone’s lecture, titled, “Now Russia Returns its History to Itself: Russia Celebrates the Centennial of World War I” will discuss Russian perceptions of World War I.

For much of the 20th Century, World War I was a forgotten war in the Soviet Union, since Soviet leaders had rejected the war as an illegitimate imperialist war. In the last few years, however, World War I has reemerged in Russian public memory through both spontaneous popular interest and the deliberate actions of a nation-building Russian state. The plans for the upcoming Centennial illuminate post-Soviet Russian national identity and military culture, and state attempts to control the nation's image.

Dr. Petrone received her B.A. degree from Hamilton College (N.Y.) and her doctorate degree from the University of Michigan. She is the author of two books, “The Great War in Russian Memory” and “Life Has Become More Joyous, Comrades: Celebrations in the Time of Stalin” and more than a dozen book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles.
