MSPR's Spring Fundraiser kicks-off with Brews & News on Feb. 29

Morehead State Public Radio’s 2020 Spring Fundraiser and Membership Drive will take place from Saturday, February 29 through Friday, March 6.

A special kick-off event is planned at Sawstone Brewery on Saturday, February 29.

“This is our annual spring fundraiser and membership drive when we directly seek financial gifts and comments from our listeners to support WMKY’s student work-studies and local programming,” said Paul Hitchcock, MSPR general manager.

WMKY (90.3FM) serves more than twenty counties throughout eastern Kentucky with regional news and cultural programming from the campus of Morehead State University. In addition, MSPR’s website provides regional news, live web stream, archived audio and community events.

“The money we raise helps maintain our grant funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,” added Hitchcock. “Our ability to raise local funds helps us meet criteria for grants to purchase national programming, such as All Things Considered, Morning Edition and The World.”

An emphasis on local news continues to be a key part of MSPR’s programming, as well as a variety of locally-hosted music programs including bluegrass, classical and jazz. Specialty programs such as A Time for Tales, Grant Alden’s Field Notes, Golden Age of Radio, Health Matters, Nothin’ But The Blues, Odd Numbers, Open Mic and That Was Radio provide unique programming to WMKY’s listeners.

Recently added to WMKY is “Our Island Universe.” Hosed by astrophysicist Dr. Shanil Virani, director of Morehead State University’s Star Theater and instructor of space systems engineering, the weekly segment looks at understanding what lies beyond the horizon and what it means to us on earth.

“An important part of our mission is to preserve and promote this region’s cultural heritage with programming that is educational, informative and entertaining,” said Hitchcock. “We have a long history of serving this community, but we need listener support to maintain our operations.”

Kicking-off the spring fundraiser, WMKY is hosting “Brews and News” at Sawstone Brewery, 175 E. Main Street, Morehead from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 29th.  Live music, news trivia and locally-crafted beer. Doors prizes and the chance to win free T-shirts, CD’s and other prizes.

“We’ll have a specially-designed T-shirt for the event,” said Hitchcock. “It’ll be a fun way to kick-off our spring fundraiser.
