MSPR Postpones Spring Fundraiser

Morehead State University

It’s been one year since Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR) last conducted an on-air fundraiser for WMKY at 90.3FM.

As a listener-supported, non-profit, public radio facility, MSPR fundraisers are traditionally held twice a year (spring and fall) to raise funds to support WMKY’s local programming and operations.

In the fall of 2020, MSPR opted not to hold its fall fundraiser due to the economic hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, MSPR asked its listeners, if they were able, to support other non-profits in the community in lieu of giving to MSPR.

COVID-19 has changed a lot of things and like so many in eastern Kentucky affected by this pandemic, MSPR has also made adjustments. MSPR’s studios are currently closed to the public, staff are working remotely or in shifts, limited personnel are allowed in the station, and equipment is disinfected before and after each use.

In April 2020, WMKY received a grant of $112,136.00 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through the 2020 CARES (Coronavirus Relief and Economic Security) Act. This grant has helped WMKY maintain local programming and operations.

As a result of receiving the CARES Act grant and considering the economic hardship in the region, MSPR has provided more than $37,500 in free (in-kind) underwriting announcements to local and small businesses as a “pay-it-forward” gesture.

Although MSPR may not be fundraising this spring, that doesn't reduce the needs in the community. MSPR is once again asking WMKY’s listeners to consider contributing to non-profit resources across the region. There are many community programs and organizations that need support for their ongoing services.

MSPR plans to resume fundraising this fall. In the meantime, listeners still wishing to make a gift to MSPR may use the pledge forms located on MSPR’s website under the “Support Us” tab at the top of the page at: http://www.wmky.org

The staff, students and volunteers of Morehead State Public Radio thanks its listeners for their ongoing support.
