MSPR to offer special programs for Labor Day weekend

Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR) will celebrate the Labor Day weekend with special programs.

Among the specials are:

"Muddy Bottom Blues – Hot Rize 40th Anniversary Bash" 
August 31 at 8:00pm; September 1 at 3:00pm

Paul Hitchcock hosts a special edition of Muddy Bottom Blues featuring Hot Rize’s 40th Anniversary Concert. Recorded live on January 12th through 14th, 2018 at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado, this live concert event features members of Hot Rize including Nick Forster, Tim O’Brien, Bryan Sutton and Pete Wernick. Joining Hot Rize on stage are friends Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, and Red Knuckles and The Trailbalzers. “Hot Rize 40th Anniversary Bash” is made possible by Ten In Hand Records.

"That Was Radio"

Leon Smothers is your host for That Was Radio, an hour-long program of nostalgia exploring all aspects of the golden age of radio from the 1920’s through the 1950’s including the programs, personalities and events that shaped those programs. On this program of That Was Radio, women in crime dramas and suspense thrillers including Nora Charles, Alice Frost, Ann Williams, Jan Miner, Virginia Gregg and others.

"The Blessings of Work"

This Music & the Spoken Word Labor Day Special "The Blessings of Work" features the following music. "One Person, from Dear World", "My Song in the Night", "Hallelujah Chorus" and more.

"Humankind Special: The Life of Dorothy Day"
September 3 at 11:00am

We profile Dorothy Day — a remarkable 20th century figure: journalist and founder of the “Catholic Worker” movement, which established soup kitchens and “houses of hospitality” in the Great Depression. More than 200 Catholic worker facilities remain in operation today. Hear the provocative story of her social activism and inspiring spiritual beliefs.

“Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame" 
September 3 at Noon

MSPR will present a program showcasing Kentucky writers. The Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame announced the 2018 Hall of Fame class at an induction ceremony at the Carnegie Center in Lexington. This year’s inductees are: John Fox Jr.; Annie Fellows Johnston; Walter Tevis; and Dr. bell hooks. A production of WUKY in Lexington.

Morehead State Public Radio broadcasts 24-hours a day from the campus of MSU and serves more than 20 counties in Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia.

Paul Hitchcock earned his Masters in Communications from Morehead State University and Bachelors in Radio-TV/Psychology from Georgetown College. A veteran broadcaster for more than 40 years and an avid fan of blues, jazz and American roots music. Hitchcock has been with WMKY since 1986 and was named General Manager in 2003. He currently hosts "Muddy Bottom Blues" (Fri., 8pm-9pm), "Nothin' But The Blues" (Sat., 8pm-12am), "Sunday Night Jazz Showcase" and "Live From The Jazz Lounge" (Sun., 8pm-9pm) and "The Golden Age of Radio" (Sun., 2pm-3pm). He also serves as producer for "A Time For Tales" and "The Reader's Notebook."
