Morehead State responds to racist email

Morehead State University

Morehead State University responded Wednesday to a racist chain email allegedly sent by the former bowling coach, Larry Wilson.

Last week, Wilson forwarded the email which was received by a prospective student and bowling prospect. According to WCPO, the email included a common racist theme, blaming African Americans for high rates of crime and sexually transmitted diseases.

Wilson managed the bowling lanes and coached the bowling team from 1972 to 2007. The bowling facility in Laughlin was named for him in 2008 and he was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2017.

University officials say they were unaware of the email until Monday, when contacted by the press.  In response, MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan said in a statement, “The volunteer has been informed verbally and in writing that he must immediately cease volunteer involvement with the bowling team.”

Morgan also promised to work with staff members and the Board of Regents to remove Wilson’s name from the bowling facility.
