Men's Tennis Drops 6-1 Home Contest to Toledo

MSU Athletics

The Toledo men's tennis team won a trio of three-set singles matches over Morehead State Sunday as the Rockets handed MSU a 6-1 defeat the EAGLE Center.

Toledo improved to 9-10 overall, while Morehead State slipped to 2-7.

"We need to maintain consistency more and quit having so many ups and downs," Head Coach Kevin Fulton said. "When we look back on this one, we'll realize we let one slip away. We need to win three-set matches, and we lost three of them today, and that was a big factor. I was happy with the play of (freshman) Sabastian (Penaloza), and I feel like sophomores Ritchie (Kruunenberg) and Gabriel (Ruiz) are on the verge of becoming a very good doubles team."

Penaloza knocked off Nicky Wong 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 in the singles lineup. He also teamed with junior Nick Mercer to win 6-2 over Roberto Meza and Wong at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 1 singles, Mark Singnil topped Kruunenberg 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, while Omar Espinosa edged Ruiz 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3. The final three-setter went to Stephen Miller over junior Enrique Samudio, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5.

The Rockets won 6-3 doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 3.

MSU is set to open Ohio Valley Conference play on Friday hosting Jacksonville State at 2 p.m. ET.
