Men's golf finishes tied for third at MSU Invitational

MSU Athletics

Morehead State placed among the top three of the 14-team field at the MSU Invitational on Tuesday in Murray, Ky. Four Eagles individually ranked in the top 11 overall, paving way for a third-place finish as a team. Morehead State shot seven-over at 284-290-285-859.

"There are lots of positives to take from this opening event," said head coach Matthew Martin. "Nine shots over three rounds is very manageable. We still need to eliminate our penalty shots and strokes above bogey."

Sophomore Cooper Collins tied for third overall, shooting 70-71-69-210 over the two-day event. Tied for seventh, freshman Cameron Dawson followed closely behind at 72-72-68-212. Blake Cartwright, a senior, claimed sole possession of 10th place with a score of 70-74-69-213.

Freshman Zac Viminitz led all players who competed as individuals, shooting 69-70-75-214 to tie for 11th overall. Also participating as an individual, junior Zach Smith tied for 35th by way of a 73-74-73-220 performance.

Joe Muschong and Nick Wilkins rounded out the Eagles' top five, shooting 72-73-79-224 and 77-74-79-230, respectively. Muschong tied for 47th overall, while Wilkins finished tied for 70th.

Zach Smith tied for 35th as an individual, logging 73-74-73-220. Michael Reed (81-72-72-225) tied for 51st, and Tyler Hillyer (76-78-72-226) tied for 57th.

The Eagles face a quick turnaround ahead of next weekend's EKU Raising Cane's Intercollegiate in Richmond, Ky.

"There is not much time to prepare for (the EKU Raising Cane's Intercollegiate)," Martin said. "But, we will take five guys over, expecting to compete against a strong field."

Morehead State will tee off on Saturday and Sunday at The University Club at Arlington.
