Men's Golf Cooper Collins Named OVC Golfer of the Week

MSU Athletics

After claiming his first career outright medalist honors at the Musketeer Classic, Morehead State men's golf's Cooper Collins garnered additional hardware Wednesday as he was named Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week.

The honor marks the third of Collins' career, having also been honored once during each of the previous three seasons. Since the OVC began awarding Golfers of the Week during the 2004 season, he is the most honored Eagle golfer, passing former golfer Logan Hogge for the most OVC Golfer of the Week awards in program history.

"Cooper ended the fall season on a high note," said head coach Matthew Martin. "He showed great patience and composure in tough conditions."

Collins secured medalist honors at the Musketeer Classic, topping the field of 87 to claim his second career victory. He fashioned scores of 67-71-71-209 to finish four-under-par Collins' opening-round 67 marked the lowest 18-hole total for Morehead State while also tying for the second-lowest round score of the event.

At the conclusion of the fall season, Collins leads Morehead State in stroke average through 15 rounds across five events, averaging a score of 70.4 a round. For the fall, he is one of two players to conclude the fall at even par while also claiming a team-best three top-10 finishes.

As a team, Morehead State claimed a top-four finish in each of its five events; the most top-four finishes opening a season since claiming five top-four finishes in six events during the 1999-00 season. The Eagles also set and tied the program-low 54-hole team total, firing an 834 at both the J.T. Poston Invitational and the Elon Phoenix Invitational.

"I can't wait to see Cooper and the rest of the team compete again in the spring," added Martin.

Collins and Morehead State return to the course in mid-February at the George Washington President's Day Match Play event. The two-day event tees off from Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Fla. on Feb. 17 and 18.
