MCTC Rowan Campus Receives LEED Gold Certification

MCTCS

The Maysville Community and Technical College Rowan Campus Postsecondary Center for Excellence has been awarded a LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The facility opened in the John Will Stacy MMRC Regional Business Park to students in January of 2018 and serves as the primary replacement for the college’s Viking Drive location near Rowan County Senior High School.

In order to obtain LEED Gold status, the building incorporated energy-saving technology into its design and daily operations. Equipment and technology such as motion-detecting sensors in classrooms and offices to ensure they are occupied before operating lights and engaging ventilation systems are examples of the thought and planning that went into the LEED design.

Other aspects of the project that helped earn the LEED Gold classification include a mechanical system that reduces energy consumption, high-performance windows and building insulation, as well as a roofing system that is designed to help maintain climate control.

Additionally, design for the grounds surrounding the building also contributes to the facility’s overall efficiency. Incorporating green space and features such as permeable pavement helps reduce the facility’s environmental impact by aiding with stormwater runoff.

“This wasn’t just a team effort, it was a dream team effort,” says MCTC Chief Operations Officer Russ Ward. “I cannot say enough great things about our project team. From our partners at the KCTCS System Office, Omni Architects, Trace Creek Construction, CMTA Mechanical & Electrical Engineers, Element Design Landscape Architects, Paladin and Brown+Kubican Engineering. Their joint efforts have helped MCTC build an incredible state-of-the-art facility and valuable training resource for our area business partners.”

“This facility represents a considerable investment by our institution for the future workforce of our region,” adds MCTC President and CEO Dr. Stephen Vacik. “When we began this project four years ago, LEED Gold was our goal. So it’s great to see that come to fruition.  Now we get to share this achievement with the next generation of our students while we help them build a better life.”

This announcement comes shortly after welcoming students to the adjacent Center for Workforce Development facility at the beginning of the fall semester. Its opening marks the completion of the second phase of the new Rowan Campus. An official opening ceremony is planned for September 11, 2019 at 2:30 pm at 100 Rocky Adkins Tech Drive. Public tours of both facilities will follow the ceremony.

This certification is the second LEED Gold Award for the Kentucky Community and Technical System placing them among a small collection of Kentucky post-secondary institutions to receive the same recognition.
