Massie Discusses Prison Costs

Cheap Jail Calls

Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie says too many non-violent felons are locked up and local judges ought to be given more discretion for handing out alternative sentences.

The Garrison Republican made the comment on KET’s “One to One with Bill Goodman.”

Massie says putting people who’ve committed non-violent offenses behind bars for long periods of time is extremely costly.

“It’s not a conservative principle to lock up that large of population of your citizens. It’s like socialism with restrained mobility. You’re paying for their food, their housing, their color TV, all of these things.” –Thomas Massie

Massie says jail costs were among Lewis County’s biggest when he served as judge executive. He also favors restoring the voting rights of felons who’ve served their sentences.
