Two Louisville Metro Police Officers are recovering after being shot during unrest in the city Wednesday night. and a suspect has been identified. 26-year-old Larynzo D. Johnson charged with two counts of assault on a police officer and 14 counts of wanton endangerment of a police officer. An LMPD spokesperson says they have obtained video showing Johnson firing at police.

LMPD Interim Police Chief Robert Schroeder said shots had been fired in a crowd downtown and the officers were responding to the emergency call. It happened around 8:40 pm, just 30 minutes before the city’s curfew was set to begin. Schroeder met briefly with the media a few hours after the incident. He would not give the identities of the two officers but said one was in surgery and both sustained “non-life-threatening injuries.”

With ongoing demonstrations expected to continue in Louisville the Interim Chief said “I am very concerned about the safety of our officers. Obviously we’ve had two officers shot tonight and it’s serious. It’s a very dangerous condition.  I think the safety of our officers and the community we serve is of the utmost importance.”

A suspect was taken into custody Wednesday night. As of Thursday morning, both officers are in stable condition.
