Lexington To Host Appalachian Health Care Forum

Parade Publications

Nearly 700 people are expected in Lexington on Thursday (March 27) to discuss health disparities in Appalachia. The aim will be to explore pooling resources and researchers to attack health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and stroke.

Patrick Kitzman is the Appalachian Translatioal Research Network Director at UK.

"We have to try to figure out logistically and realistically that we can pull that off.  I don't know yet. That's part of what we're trying to do,” said Kitzman.

Individual household income can play a key role in helping to addressing family health issues. Kitzman says poor families often have poor diets.

"By having access to better jobs so they can afford the food.  Hopefully having better access to the food, that is going to be one of the major keys to success out there," added Kitzman.

In addition to UK and the University of Pikeville, representatives are coming to a one day Lexington summit from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio University, Ohio State University, Marshall, and West Virginia University.
