Lewis County awarded grant funds for fire dept repair

Lewis County was recently awarded $495,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds that will be used to renovate and repair the Firebrick Volunteer Fire Department.

Sarah Dunahoo, commissioner for the Kentucky Department of Local Government appeared at the Lewis County Fiscal Courtroom to make the announcement, emphasizing the importance of upkeeping vital facilities that serve the community.

“Projects like this are crucial to the public safety of our communities,” Dunahoo said. “These renovations will improve the safety and effectiveness of our first-responders and help them continue to deliver quality services to the citizens of Lewis and Greenup counties.”

According to a press release from the DLG, the Firebrick Volunteer Fire Department facility, first constructed in the 1970s, serves eastern Lewis County and western Greenup County. The fire department currently serves nearly 600 structures, including 486 homes and numerous businesses.

With the awarded funds, the fire department renovation will include remediation of mold, installation of a new heating and cooling system, new windows, an ADA-compliant meeting room and restrooms, along with a new roof and numerous interior upgrades.

Todd Ruckel expressed his gratitude for the assistance with this renovation project.

These funds for Firebrick Fire Department were greatly needed. It will allow them to make necessary upgrades to better protect their community," said Ruckel.
