Kentucky Distillers Seek Sales Tax Relief

The Town Dish

The Kentucky Distillers Association is serving notice that it will seek regulatory relief from state lawmakers when the General Assembly convenes for its 2016 session.

The organization’s director of governmental affairs made that clear during a hearing Thursday (October 15) before a panel of House and Senate members.

Kristin Meadors says other states have taken steps to boost the industry and help the tourist trade.

“Rhode Island recently completely exempted wine and spirits from their sales tax. In 2009, we added a sales tax to the sale of alcohol here in Kentucky. Colorado, they recently enacted legislation to have distillery pubs.”

Meadors says there were no distilleries in the state of Washington in 2005. She says because its legislature allowed the industry to participate in special events and put no limits on sales, Washington now has 110 distilleries.
