Kennesaw State slips past MSU Soccer 2-0

MSU Athletics

Despite outshooting its opponent for the first time in 2018 season, the Morehead State soccer team fell to Kennesaw State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Kennesaw State.

The Eagles fired a season-high 17 shots while also having a season-best nine shots on goal. Of the nine shots on goal, two were near goals that were bounced off the goal as senior forward Dani Wilson's first shot in the seventh minute hit the crossbar and freshman midfielder Jenna Ahlbrand's second shot found the post in the 61st minute.

Wilson took three shots with two on goal while Ahlbrand shot twice in the match.

"We hit the crossbar in the first, hit it again in the second," said Morehead State head coach Warren Lipka. "We put and emphasis on having a better attacking day and we did but we just have to finish on the opportunities we get."

The owls took the lead with a goal in the 19th minute from Jenna Vollrath. Vollrath finished off a cross that came from Erin Harris by putting the ball into the back-left corner of the goal.

Kennesaw State again found the back of the net in the 70th minute when Emely Sosa was in the right spot to sneak a deflected ball past redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Eva Helgadottir.

Helgadottir, who entered the match with a NCAA-best 37 saves, increased her save total by four while facing 14 shots.

The Owls' goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao made nine saves to record her second shutout of 2018.

Morehead State now embarks on a two-game road trip, traveling to Kent State on Friday before heading to Philadelphia for a date with Duquesne on Sunday, September 9.

Coach Lipka believes his team will continue to improve upon today's game and be ready for the upcoming tests.

"We're going to get back into the classroom and watch some film and continue to work things out," said Lipka. "I have a ton of confidence, I think they have the ability, we've just got to continue working."
