Motorists should watch for lane closures as work starts this month on a $3 million Interstate 64 cable median barrier project in Carter and Boyd counties.
The cable barrier, a safety measure that uses a fence-like structure of continuous steel cables to help prevent vehicles from crossing the median into opposing travel lanes, will be installed on 20 miles of I-64 from mile marker 161 at the Tygarts Creek bridge in Olive Hill to mile marker 181 at the US 60 overpass at the Boyd County line.
Contractors expect to start construction Monday, Aug. 15, in Carter County and progress eastward to Boyd County, working in approximately two-mile sections of highway at a time.
During construction, one-lane traffic is possible with intermittent shoulder and fast lane closures inside those two-mile work zones. Motorists should watch message boards for instructions and heed warning signs. Speed limits may be reduced in work zones.
Work is being done by the George B. Stone Company LLC under a $3,163,018.80 low-bid contract with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Work will continue through November.
