Humphries Double-Double Powers Women's Hoops Valiant Effort at Belmont

MSU Athletics

Senior forward Orlandra Humphries scored 12 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds to post her third consecutive double-double as the Morehead State Women's Basketball team fell 71-62 to Ohio Valley Conference rival Belmont on Saturday afternoon at the Curb Event Center.

The Eagles turned the ball over a season-low six times and hung with the four-time defending OVC Tournament Champions for an entire 40 minutes.

"They went on a run early in the game and forced a quick timeout from us but I thought after that our defense was pretty solid and kept us in it and even gave us the lead in that first half," said MSU head coach Greg Todd. "We didn't shoot the ball the best today but we got after it on the offensive glass. Our rebounding and defense gave us a chance up until the very end today. Proud of our team's effort on the road against a good team"

The Bruins opened the game on a 13-2 run which prompted a timeout by Todd at the 6:56 mark of the first quarter. Following the timeout, Morehead State's Breuna Jackson nailed a triple and drew a foul to create a four-point play and spark a 19-12 run to close the quarter, making it 25-21 in favor of Belmont after one quarter.

The Bruins again pulled out to nine-point advantage in the second quarter before Humphries was able to mark off the final four points of the half, making it a 44-39 game at the break. Humphries, who scored eight of her 12 points in the second period, scored the final bucket of the half on a put-back hoop with six seconds remaining.

Humphries, a six-foot Chicago native, grabbed a season-best six offensive boards in the game. Her 19-rebound effort was the most by an MSU player during the 2019-20 season.

In the second half, Belmont managed to keeps its lead at five-or-more despite being outworked on the boards, 26-22, by Morehead State.

Nashville native Breuna Jackson scored in double-figures for the third consecutive game, dropping in 14 points with a 3-of-6 (.500) clip from beyond the arc. Junior Jazzmyn Elston led the game in scoring, tying a career-high outing with 18 points off the bench.

The loss drops the Eagles to 7-11 overall and evens their OVC mark at 3-3.

Belmont, which had four players achieve double-figures, had forward Conley Chinn drop in a team-best 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The Bruins improve their season mark to 10-7 and are now 5-1 in OVC play.

Next up, Morehead State travel to Tennessee Tech on Thursday. The Eagles will look to avenge a 20-point setback against the Golden Eagles on Jan.4. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 6:30 p.m. ET at the Eblen Center.
