MSU Athletics

For the fourth consecutive season, Morehead State men's golf ends its opening event of the year with a top-10 finish, including a top-three finish in each of the last three seasons. The Eagles third-place finish at the EKU Raising Cane's Intercollegiate also gives the program three consecutive top-10 placements at the event.

Morehead State concluded play, fashioning team scores of 283-281-287-851 during the event. The Eagles finished 11 strokes over par, grabbing the second-best finish amongst the events' seven-team Ohio Valley Conference contingent, including defeating hosts Eastern Kentucky by eight strokes.

"This tournament provides us with a baseline for the rest of the year," said head coach Matthew Martin. "We need to eliminate some mistakes over the course of the entire 54 holes."

Putting together a top-three team finish at the event was helped by four top-20 finishes amongst the starting five-some, including two top-five finishes. Notching two top-five finishes, the Eagles continued a streak of opening the season with at least two top-10 finishers, having done so each season since 2017.

Juniors Joe Muschong and Zac Viminitz led all Morehead State scorers, tying for fourth at the conclusion of play Sunday. Muschong marked down scores of 69-68-74-211 while Viminitz wrote in marks of 71-70-70-211 to both finish one-over-par. The duo tied for the lead amongst OVC golfers at the event but did secure Morehead State as the only league team to place two golfers within the top-10 finishers.

Redshirt junior Ryan Gillum wrapped play, placing tied for 18th. He crafted scores of 72-70-72-214 to finish four-over-par. Rounding out the Eagles top-20 group was senior Cooper Collins, finishing the event at five-over. He fashioned scores of 71-73-71-215 to finish tied for 20th.

Rounding out the team scoring, redshirt sophomore Mason McGhee marked in totals of 74-78-75-227, finishing tied for 58th. Competing in their first collegiate event and as individuals, freshmen Jon Kosier and Brody Webb concluded the event tied for 70th and tied for 54th, respectively. Kosier manufactured scores of 81-78-74-233 while Webb marked in totals of 74-75-75-224.

"Joe, Zac, Cooper, and Ryan played very well in stretches and absolutely all have the ability to play even better," added Martin. "We look forward to battling with [event-champion] Northern Kentucky again next week."

Morehead State returns to the course on Sep. 23-24, returning to the NKU Fall Classic for the first time since the 2017-18 season after sending only individuals last season. The two-day event tees off from its new home at Lassing Pointe Golf Course in Union, Ky.
