Festival of Trees lights up holiday season in Maysville

Terry Prather, The Ledger Independent

More than two dozen decorated Christmas trees will be offered up for bids during the Season of Hope Festival of Trees beginning today at Phillips Folly on Sutton Street.

The event is a fund-raiser for Comprehend and the Women's Crisis Center, organizers said.

David Green of Comprehend said he has attended one in Ashland for the past several years and when Stephanie Gastauer mentioned it to him he was all in.

"We were determined to do it this year so we then approached the Women’s Crisis Center. They were willing and since I work for Comprehend we decided to do it as a joint venture like we do for New Years," Green said.

"Melissa Greenwell, Stephanie and I wanted to bring this to Maysville because it is a wonderful event and something the entire community can enjoy," Green said. "I think it is a great kick-off of events for Maysville and the surrounding communities to start the holiday season."

Trees are on display -- all 26 of them along with five festive wreaths -- at the historic home and will be open for public viewing beginning at 6-8 p.m. today and continuing during the same times on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The display will be closed Thanksgiving and reopen on Friday from 6-8 p.m., and on Saturday from 1-8 p.m. with Santa and Mrs. Claus on hand from 2-4 p.m. Sunday will be the last day for the event with viewing from 3-6 p.m.

"We are really excited about this opportunity and we can’t thank Rebecca Cartmell enough for suggesting we host it at Phillip’s Folly. She contacted the owners and they were willing to open their home to us to provide this spectacular event to the community. I think people will be just as excited to see this beautiful home as they are the beautifully decorated trees," Green said.

The public is invited to bid and vote for their favorite tree or wreath. Winning bidders will be notified on Monday, Nov. 27 with pick-up on Nov. 27 and 28.

"We hope people come and view the trees. Hopefully, they will enjoy them so much they will bid on them to have in their homes or to donate to local businesses in our area," Green said.

All proceeds from the sale of the trees will be split between Comprehend and the Women’s Crisis center to help fund the programs the organizations provide to the communities they serve.
