Elston has Career Outing as Women's Hoops falls short at Tennessee Tech

MSU Athletics

Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week Jazzmyn Elston bucketed a career-best 30 points as the Morehead State Women's Basketball team came up short, 82-75, against league-leading Tennessee Tech at the Hooper Eblen Center on Thursday evening.

Elston, who scored in double-figures at both Tennessee State and Belmont last week, continued her net-scorching tour through the Volunteer State in the opening quarter. The 5-foot-9 guard came off the bench and preceded to knock down two triples and a shot paint for a tone-setting eight points that helped the Eagles take a 16-13 advantage after the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles quickly tied the game back up at 16 with 9:19 remaining in the second quarter as guard Kesha Brady converted on an and-one hoop. Elston though fired back by sinking a third triple at the 8:56 mark to put MSU on top 19-16.

The teams continued to play punch-counterpunch until Elston sank a career-high tying fourth trifecta with 5:03 remaining until the half, sparking a 11-4 run for the Eagles to close the quarter.

At the break, Elston had tallied 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and a 4-of-5 clip from three-point range to lead Morehead State to a 38-31 lead over Tennessee Tech.

In the third quarter, Elston once again scored at will as marked off 11-more points and topped a previous career-best of 21. Tennessee Tech though managed to weather the bucket barrage by Elston as it found a scoring weapon of its own in All-OVC guard Jordan Brock.

Brock scored 12 of her team-high 21 points in the quarter to help the Golden Eagles tie the game at 58 after three quarter.

Morehead State kept the game tied or within four points in the final quarter until Brady knocked down a corner three with 6:23 remaining, giving Tennessee Tech a seven-point lead which it held onto until the final buzzer.

"It was a great shooting night for Jazzmyn but I liked the fight our team showed collectively all evening," said MSU head coach Greg Todd. "We created extra possessions for ourselves on the offensive glass and did some good things defensively."

Elston's 30-point performance is the first 30-plus point scoring effort for a Morehead State hooper during the 2019-20 season. The newcomer, who transferred to MSU following a two-year stint playing junior college hoops at State Fair (Mo.), shot 12-of-18 from the field and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.

On the glass, the Eagles won the battle on the boards, 39-34. Freshman guard Ariel Kirkwood grabbed four offensive and defensive boards to lead the team with eight rebounds.

Despite playing just 15 minutes due to foul trouble, senior forward Orlandra Humphries turned in a fourth consecutive double-figure scoring effort with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

Senior Breuna Jackson managed to extend a double-figure scoring streak as well, dropping in 11 points while also dishing out four assists.

Offensively, Morehead State went 33-of-70 (.471) from the floor which is a season-best against NCAA Division I competition.

Tennessee Tech's scoring was paced by Brock's 21 points while Brady added 19. Senior forward Mackenzie Coleman recorded the game's lone double-double with a 16-point, 11-rebound effort.

The win moves the Golden Eagles to 15-4 overall and helps them remain atop the league's standings with a 7-0 recorded in OVC play.

MSU now sits at 7-12 overall and is 3-4 in conference play.

Next up, the Eagles travel to Alabama to face off with Jacksonville State on Saturday. Morehead State defeated the Gamecocks 67-48 at home in its OVC opener on Jan. 2. Tipoff between MSU and JSU is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET at the Pete Matthews Coliseum.
